Abstract

Air pollution emitted from waste water treatment plants ”WWTPs” causes environmental risks. It is more problematic if there are sensitive land uses around the WWTP. This study identifies and measures these risks and evaluates the factors affecting on them, also explain the risks on surrounding activities to minimize it. This research measures the hazard of bioaerosol in several WWTPs, working by activated sludge processes ”ASP” by measuring the bioaerosol pollution in free air inside and outside several WWTPs under different conditions and parameters like planting covers, shading, temperature, distance from the source, time in the day and solar radiation. The effect of these parameters on the bioaerosol has been estimated for several wastewater treatment plants ”. For each plant, the microorganisms has been estimated in air as colony forming units per cubic meter (CFU/M3) under different conditions of planting covers, shading, temperature, distance from the source, time in the day and solar radiation. In addition the secondary parameters such as boundary conditions, wind direction have been considered. It was found that, the highest values of bioaerosol pollution were above the aeration tanks and the lowest values were above coloration tanks. There are 3 main effective factors on bio aerosol pollution planting density, solar radiation and Shades. There is a direct relationship between bioaerosol pollution in the air and both of planting density and shading ratio. Conversely, there is an inversely relationship between solar radiation and bioaerosol pollution. Despite the air quality improvements that take place by plants. They increase microorganisms account in the air. Also presence of shades in the WWTP and around it increase microorganisms account in air. Bioaerosol pollution has multiplied several times under plants from 1366 CFU/M3 to 14597 CFU/M3, also by shade from 4976 CFU/M3 to 19704 CFU/M3, but solar radiation decreased the pollution value from 13933 CFU/M3 to 796 CFU/M3. This research also studied the land uses around the WWTPs and noted rolls for these land-uses and explained how to deal with the area around the WWTP by land use control polices and planning solutions.
