Abstract

Stress is the basic component of our daily life and nature of intensive care nurses work related because they are deal with critical ill patient who needs continuous observation, connected with many devices, machines, equipment, supplies, expose to occupational hazards as high noise, infectious diseases, drugs. This stressful atmosphere in intensive care units may be lead to job dissatisfaction among nurses with their job. Job satisfaction was expressed the amount of agreement between the expectation and the reward the job provides. Managers need to solve and reduce causes of job stress and promote job satisfaction. Therefore, The aim of this study is to asses the relation between stress and job satisfaction among staff nurses working in Intensive care units through:
1. Assessing stress level among staff nurses working in intensive care units.
2. Determining job satisfaction level among staff nurses working in intensive care units.
3. Identifying the relationship between stress and job satisfaction among staff nurses working in intensive care units.
The study was conducted at 7 intensive care units at Nasser Institute Hospital. The actual study sample was 80 nurses who had experience more than one year in the intensive care units. The data were collected by using two tools:
1- Self administered questionnaire sheet:
This tool is consisting of two parts:
Part 1: Socio-demographic data about the subjects such: age, level of education and year of experience.
2- Part 2: Expended nursing stress scale (ENSS) was included 63 items.
3- Job satisfaction questionnaire sheet was included 62 items.
The results of this study have shown the following most important findings:
 The majority of the study sample (81.25%) had moderate stress level.
 Concerning sources of stress, the most source of stress as the study sample reported was workload items.
 There was no relation between stress and socio-demographic characteristics except in relation to place of work.
 Three quarters of the study sample (75%) had moderate job satisfaction level.
 Concerning sources of job satisfaction, the most source of job satisfaction as the study sample reported was safety and security items.
 There was no relation between job satisfaction and socio-demographic characteristics except in relation to place of work and work schedule.
 There is a negative statistically significant correlation between total stress level and total job satisfaction level among nurses working in intensive care units at Nasser Institute Hospital.
Recommendation:
 Hospitals’ organization decision makers should pay attention to alleviate organizational factors causing stress.
 Improving the organization and work physical environmental factors.
 Hire support staff for non nursing activities, as nurse aids.
 Regular staff meeting allows staff members to express their feeling openly and get feedback and support.
 Enhancing career growth and increasing the opportunity of attending scientific conferences, meeting, and workshops.
