Abstract

Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the most common infectious disease affecting chicks, causing great economic losses, as it may act as a contamination source of poultry meat and eggs.
Out of 160 broiler chickens (one to five weeks), The flocks were located at different areas of Behira , Kafr El-Sheikh and Alexandria Governorates, 16 broiler chickens were positive with percentage of 10%, with 24 isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae were recovered with percentage of 5 % out from 480 samples.
The source of isolates were mainly lungs, joints and intestine.
Morphological, biochemical and molecular identification revealed 24 isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae.
The highest percentage of isolation of Klebsiella pneumoniae was in lung 7.5% (12 isolates from 160 lung) then in joint with percentage of 5% (8 isolates from 160 joint) and finally in large intestine 2.5% (4 Isolates from 160 intestine).
Antimicrobial susceptibility were:-
22 isolates were sensitive to cefotaxime.
20 isolates were sensitive to meropenem.
19 isolates were sensitive to amikacin.
18 isolates were sensitive to impienem.
15 isolates were sensitive to tobramycin.
17 isolates were intermediate susceptible to gentamycin.
All isolates were resistant to amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid.
23 isolates were resistant to cefepime.
22 isolates were resistant to azithromycin.
22 isolates were resistant to lomifloxacin.
22 isolates were resistant to vancomycin.
19 isolates were resistant to ceftriaxone.
19 isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin.
PCR for detection of Klebsiella pneumoniae gene (16S-23S ITS) confirmed the results of bacteriological examination of samples.
Virulence factors tested were magA, fimH, aerobactin and traT.
Our isolates were positive for fimH and traT genes with percentage 100%.
Our isolates were positive for magA gene with percentage 42%.
Our isolates were negative for aerobactin gene.
