Abstract

S
ubstance use is one of the world’s most pressing problems threatening people of every age, socio-economic background, geographic region, educational level, and ethnic or racial identity. What is alarming being its gradual change from social disease into a household companion in many communities where people regard its presence as a normal thing in the society. The most startling worldwide trends that have emerged are the increased availability and variety of drugs and the prevalence of unsafe substances use among the youth. Unsafe substances use patterns among youth change rapidly with different drugs becoming popular, unsafe substances use has also expanded to a younger and wider segment of the youth population (Caday, 2017).
Unsafe substances use is a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, wherein the person may also suffer from tolerance and withdrawal, unsafe Substances use refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances including alcohol, opioids, cannabinoids, hypnotics, cocaine, hallucinogens, tobacco, caffeine, nicotine. Unsafe substances use is the taking of drugs or a deliberate use of drugs for purposes other than its intended purpose without the supervision of a physician or a medical practitioner (Philip et al., 2016).
The unsafe use of substances among secondary school students may lead to numberless consequences that are harmful to health, psychoactive substances, such as tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, can increase the occurrence of accidents and types of violence, mood disorders, mental diseases, impaired psychosocial development, unintended pregnancy, exposure to sexually transmitted diseases, mortality, among others, Besides, it is an important predictor of use and dependency during adulthood (Malta et al., 2014).
Aim of the study.
The study aimed to determine Knowledge, attitude, and practice of unsafe substances use among secondary school students in rural area through:
• Assessing secondary school students’ knowledge about different types of unsafe substances and their effects on their lives.
• Assessing practice/use of unsafe substances among secondary school students.
• Assessing secondary school students’ attitude towards unsafe substances use.
• Assessing secondary school students’ health status.
Study design: -
Descriptive design had been utilized.
Subjects and methods:
Setting:
This study was conducted at three schools in Motobis, which were Motobis secondary school for girls, Motobis secondary school for boys, Nagya Sallam secondary school.
Sampling:
Random sampling procedure were used to obtain the sample size of 297 participants representing 10% of total number of secondary school students, their aged ranged from15-18 years old.
Data collection tools:
A structured questionnaire was used to determine knowledge, practice, and attitude regarding unsafe substances use, it we developed by the researcher; it consists of:
 First part: Socio demographic characteristic such of secondary school students as Age, Sex, level of Education, Etc.
 Second part: Secondary school students’ knowledge regarding different types of substances, harmful effects on their lives, rout of administration.
 Third part: Practice/use of unsafe substances among secondary school students.
 Fourth part: Secondary school students’ attitude towards unsafe substances use, the factors associated with drug abuse.
 Fifth part: Students’ health status regarding weight, height, general medical condition, past medical and surgical history, through school medical report.
 The finding of the study could be summarized as follows:
• More than half of secondary school students had poor knowledge regarding unsafe substances use.
• The majority of the secondary school students not practice unsafe substances use.
• More than half of the secondary school students have a positive attitude toward unsafe substances use.
• More than half of the studied sample were unhealthy.
• There was statistically significant relationship between secondary school students’ socio-demographic characteristics and total knowledge of the student regarding unsafe substances use with p-vale (<0.05).
• There was statistically significant relationship between students’ socio-demographic characteristics and level of practice regarding unsafe substances use with p-vale (<0.05).
• There was statistically significant relationship between students’ socio-demographic characteristics and level of attitude toward unsafe substances use with p-vale (<0.05).
The following recommendations were reached in the light of the results of this study:
1. Increase public awareness regarding hazards of unsafe substances use and how to avoid factors that lead to it.
2. Ensure availability of standardized screening tools on identifying adolescents at high risk for unsafe substances use.
3. Conducting school health program to increase students’ awareness regarding hazards of unsafe substances use.
4. Activation of school programs for smoking prevention and cessation among secondary school students.
5. Further researches in wide scale are needed to study the different factors that increase the prevalence of unsafe substances use and find how to prevent its occurrence to minimize its negative effects on individual, families and communities
