Abstract

Hearing loss affects speech redundancy owing to non-audible or distorted parts of the speech signal. The affected redundancy permits noise to degrade the intelligibility of speech signal in patients suffering from HL. Hence, most advanced hearing aids designs aim to improve the SNR for the purpose of enhancing the signal with respect to the background noise. Methods for improving the SNR in hearing aids differ among HA companies. They include Spectral subtraction, Wiener filter, Adaptive noise cancelation, Directional microphones and Noise Reduction algorithms. S-ABR provides an objective assessment of encoding of speech at the level of the brainstem. Moreover, S-ABR recording in noise increases its sensitivity in evaluating auditory processing and related disorders. S-ABR retains speech-like signal characteristics allowing detailed characterization of the effects of complex processing performed by modern hearing aids, such as wideband and narrowband compression, and also attack and release times of compression. This work aimed to study speech processing in patients fitted with hearing aids by the use of S-ABR. As well to study the effect of noise reduction algorithm within the HA on speech processing with and without the presence of noise. This study included a study group consisted of 20 adults with mild to severe sensorineural HL. All the studied subjects were fitted with Beltone Bold hearing aid and underwent aided S-ABR.
