Abstract

Twenty-five plots representing the two communities dominated by reeds in the Nile Delta were separated into 4 vegetation groups (A-D) using the Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN). Phragmites australis is represented in the four groups with relatively high abundance in groups B and C. Typha domingensis had narrow range and is found in group D. The major edaphic variables influencing the distribution and abundance of these species were explored using Detrended Canonical Correspondance Analysis (DCCA) ordination. Results indicated that Phragmites australis, while Typha domingensis is confined along low gradient of soil salinity in comparison to the other species. The selected reeds showed variable behaviour against soil salinity.
Results indicated that the relationship in highly positively correlated between Fe in water and plant tissue (pc0.01).A regatise significant correction and recorded bet mean Ni( p<0.01) and Cu (p<0.01) in water and plant tissue . However , the relationship was highly negatively correlated between Cu,Co in the soil and plant tissue of Typha (p<0.01).Results indicated the chemical properties of water like PH ,EC ,alkalunty , ammonia , nitrites ,nitrates, total nitrogen and total phosphorus. Table(3) showed the results of the previons parameters .PH ranged from 7.9 site2 and the maximum vluem was recorded the site 9 was 8.43. The water conductivity varied from 11.1 site6 up to 18.8 ms/cm for site10 .This sites is highly polluted botte. Agrecultureal as well as industrial waster water .Alkalintly varied from 165 mg/l to 369 mg/l for site 3 .
Chemicale analysis of soil indicated that the minium PH was 8.87 for soil sampleswere collected from site 3 ,and the maximum value was 9.35 was recorded for site 10. This site was heavly polluted with botte agricultural and industrial polluted waster water .The hehighest mean value for soil conductivity was 1.97ms/cm for site9 ,calcium carbonates was 11.5% for site 9.
The obtained results are useful for the optimal management of reeds in the wetlands of Egypt where vigorous growth of Phragmites and Typha cause major problems.
