Abstract

The chemistry of 2-(aminomethyl benzimidazole) ligand and their ruthenium metal complexes have attracted a lot of interest due to their facile synthesis and wide range of applications including antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer, catalytic and electrical fields. Ruthenium complexes of 2-(aminomethyl benzimidazole) are considered to be among the most important stereochemical models in main group and transition metal coordination chemistry due to their preparative accessibility and structural variety.
The thesis entitled ” Physico-chemical studies on some organic compounds and their metal complexes ”comprises of four Chapters:
Chapter one contains a literature survey of the importance and structural chemistry of 2-(aminomethyl benzimidazole) ligand and their ruthenium complexes. Also, it includes a literature survey of biological activity of 2-(aminomethyl benzimidazole) and ruthenium complexes.
Chapter two concerned with the experimental work. The complexes were prepared:
1- Synthesis of [RuCl(AMBI)(H2O)3]Cl2
2- Synthesis of [RuIIICl3 (AMBI) (H2O)]
3- Synthesis of [RuIIICl2(AsPh3)2(AMBI)].2H2O.CH3OH
4- Synthesis of [RuCl2 (PPh3)2(AMBI)]
Ruthenium complexes were prepared from 2-(aminomethyl benzimidazole) ligand.
Elemental analysis (C, H and N), molar conductivity measurements, magnetic measurements, spectral studies (IR, electronic, 1H NMR spectra), thermal studies (TGA), antimicrobial, Cytotoxicity, Antioxidant investigation and ac conductivities of the synthesized ruthenium complexes were provided.
The results and discussion were included in two Chapters:
Chapter three includes the synthesis of ruthenium(III) complexe of the type [RuCl(AMBI)(H2O)3]Cl2 by the reaction of RuCl3.nH2O with 2-(aminomethyl benzimidazole)ligand (in a molar ratio 1:2) in ethanol. The ligand and their Ru(III) complexe have been characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, spectroscopic (FTIR, UV–vis and X-ray diffraction) and thermal analysis techniques. Ruthenium(III) complexe are found to be stable, paramagnetic, low spin and octahedrally coordinated by the ligand through tertiary nitrogen atom of imidazole ring and nitrogen atom of amino group. The anticancer activity of in vitro and in vivo models of [RuCl(AMBI)(H2O)3]Cl2 complexe have been investigated.

Chapter four
includes the synthesis of two ruthenium(III) and one ruthenium (II) complexes of the type [RuIIICl3 (AMBI) (H2O)], [RuIIICl2(AsPh3)2(AMBI)].2H2O.CH3OH and [RuCl2 (PPh3)2(AMBI)] from 2-(aminomethyl benzimidazole)ligand. The ruthenium complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, spectroscopic (FTIR, UV–vis and 1H NMR) and thermal analysis techniques. Ruthenium (III) complexes are found to be stable, (paramagnetic except [RuCl2 (PPh3)2(AMBI)] is diamagnetic), and octahedrally coordinated by the ligand through tertiary nitrogen atom of imidazole ring and nitrogen atom of amino group. Antimicrobial, cytotoxic and antioxidant activity of all ruthenium complexes have been investigated.
