Abstract Many industrial activities require large amounts of water and produce highly polluted wastewater, which may cause severe environmental pollution if they are released to the environment without any proper treatment. Electro-flotation is a technology that combines the conventional coagulation, flotation and electro-chemistry. Electroflotation requires simple equipment, low initial investment, low operating cost and requiring no chemicals. The removal behavior of some heavy metal ions, dyes and suspended metal particles were investigated in details. The pH was an important factor during applying electro-flotation technique; the higher removal was achieved at neutral pH for almost different kind of candidate materials. The kinetics, mechanisms and thermodynamic parameters were studied. The cell parameters such as current density, ionic strength, stirring speed, current type, electrodes connection and inter distance were also studied. A simple designed electro-flotation cell prototype was employed and suggested for treating different industries effluents. The treated wastewaters met the International Standard for ”drinking or irrigation” water. The operating costs for different industrial effluents was ranged from 0.177 to 1 US$ per cubic meter depending on the effluent type.
