Abstract

Contemporary Building Architecture styles have started to use screens as a decorative façade elements inspiring the traditional building features. However, aesthetic aspect was the dominant approach for using these screens during the design stage targeting to represent the vernacular architecture, while a facade skin or envelope must take in consideration the environmental aspects due to its major impact on the overall building energy and daylighting performance, this research discuss designing screen shading in front of glazed facade that achieves he best environmental performance for the building.
On the other hand, regarding the computational design technologies, Parametric studies involving dynamic environmental simulation programs are traditionally used to compare different design alternatives in early stages, but in order to deal with the complexity of the problem additional methods that explore the design space to a larger extent are needed, therefore the study direct special interest to the computational design approaches and techniques.
This research focuses on the application and performance assessment of geometric patterns as shading screens and shows how the geometric patterns can function as a design agency, an environmental control system, and a cultural element.
The research starts firstly with defining the role of the building envelope and tracks the development of the facade screen as an architectural element throughout the decades. Secondly the research defines the tools of the computational optimization approach which are Parametric modeling, Simulation, Optimization and Generation. Then different related case study projects has be presented and analyzed based on specific criteria. Finally, discussing a framework, which is based on the performance-base design and the generative design approaches to optimize building elements. an application where the screen perforation pattern size and location optimized by using Rhino/grasshopper as a graphical algorithm editor, Diva Plug-in for grasshopper as a simulation engine for the environmental analysis aspects and Galapagos as generative problem solver.
