Abstract

Surah Maryam is the nineteenth Surah of the Holy Quran, and it is a Meccan Surah that is named after Virgin Mary (Prophet Jesus’ mother). It is the only Surah that is named after a woman’s name in the Quran and consists of ninety eight verses that are categorized and subdivided into three sections. The first section (2-40) discusses the story of Allah’s prophet Zakariyah and Allah’s gift of giving birth to his son John. Besides, it reviews the story of Maryam and the miraculous birth of her son Jesus, which leads to the christian claims of his being the son of God. Then, comes the second section of Surah Maryam (41-65) that reviews Abraham’s disagreement with his family and their idolatrous gods, in addition to the stories of various prophets (Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Ishmael, Idris, Adam and Noah); and how their people have reacted to their message. Lastly, the third section (66-98) discusses the truthfulness of the Day of Resurrection, and depicts of the enormous Day of Judgment.
According to tafsir Ebn-Kathir (774 AH), Al- Wahidi (1991) and Adil Salahi (ed. & trans) (2005), the main objective of revealing Surah Maryam is to emphasize Allah’s oneness and reject the claimed thoughts assigning a son or a partner to Him, besides the awareness of the enormity of the Day of Judgment, the resurrection and the fate of the disbelievers who oppose Allah’s message. The theme of the Surah fits perfectly with the stories of the various prophets which take up nearly two-thirds of the Surah. Furthermore, some verses have been revealed separately according to particular circumstances such as the following:
2
a. َ كِِّب َ ر ِ ر ْ مَأِب َّ لَِّإ ُل َّ زَنَتَن اَ م َ و ﴿ ٤٦ ﴾
And we (angels) descend not except by the Command of your Lord (O Muhammad SAW). (MMK & MTH, 1984)
There are different reasons for revealing the above verse. Firstly, according to ʼibn-ʼAbbas, Prophet Muhammad asked Jibril about the reasons of not having more visits from him, and then this verse was revealed as an answer to Mohammed’s question showing that angels only obey Allah’s orders Who indeed forgets no one. Secondly, according to ʽOkruma, ʼl-Daḥḥak and ʼl-Kalbī, when disbelievers asked Prophet Mohammed about ʼṣḥab ʼl-kahf and thī-ʼl-qarn-ayn, he did not answer their questions waiting for Allah’s answers for a long time. Thus, he asked Jibril why it took him so long to visit him, and that was Jibril’s answer to him.
b. ﴾ وَيَقُولُ ا إ لِْنسَانُ أَإِذَا مَا مِتُّ لَسَ إ وفَ أُ إ خرَجُ حَيًّا ﴿ ٤٤
And man (the disbeliever) says: ”When I am dead, shall I then be raised up alive?” (MMK & MTH, 1984)
This verse was revealed due to ʼabi-ʼibn-khalaf, the disbeliever, who crashed some bones with his hands shouting that Muhammad claimed that his God “Allah” can resurrect the dead, thus the latter verse was revealed.
c. ﴾ أَفَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي كَفَرَ بِآيَاتِنَا وَقَالَ لََُوتَيَنَّ مَا ا لَّ وَوَلَ ا دا ﴿ ٧٧
Have you seen him who disbelieved in Our Ayat (this Quran and Muhammad SAW) and (yet) says: ”I shall certainly be given wealth and children [if I will be alive (again)],” (MMK & MTH, 1984)
The reason of the revelation of this verse reported by Al- Khabbab Ibn Al-Aratt who said: “I had money due to be paid to me by Al-Abbas Ibn- Wael. I went to him asking for payment, but he answered, ‘I shall not repay you until you deny

the existence of Muhammad’s God and his message.’ I said, ‘I shall not deny until you die and be resurrected.’ Then, he said, ‘Well! Wait till I am resurrected after my death and by then I will have wealth and children. Then, you can come and I will pay off my debt.’” Thus, this verse was revealed.
0.2 . Stating the Problem:
In order to spread Islam, it has become necessary to translate the meanings of the Arabic Quranic context into different foreign languages. The interpretation process of Quran with its eloquence of expressions and perfection of structural sequence has affected the accuracy of the intended significance of ST while conveying the meaning of the Arabic text into English. Accordingly, the inaccurate interpretations have provoked confusion and misunderstanding for the non-Arab Muslim readers.
0.3 . Aim of Study:
The research attempts to compare and analyze the different interpretations of the syntactic structure of some verses of the Quran, specifically in Surah Maryam, and how these structures have affected the accuracy and quality of the interpretations. The choice of Surah Mayam, in particular, is an attempt to highlight one of Allah’s miraculous messages which is the birth of Allah’s prophet ‘Isaa (Jesus) by his mother Maryam (Mary), who is the only woman that has been mentioned by name in the Holy Quran, and how interpreters have interpreted and conveyed its meaning to non-Arab Muslims by analyzing the three different interpretations syntactically and semantically
