Abstract

This study was conducted at pediatric neurology clinic, children’s hospital, faculty of medicine, Ain Shams University, Egypt. With the aim to determine the impact of tic disorders on quality of life (QoL) and behavioral functioning in children with epilepsy and to unmask whether ADHD being an epilepsy co morbidity is more common in those with tic disorders or not. Lastly to highlight the relationship between ASOT and tic disorders in children with epilepsy. Sixty children with idiopathic epilepsy and normal intelligent quotient who are not using any stimulant medications aged 4 to 18 years old were divided into the following two groups.
 group 1:
Thirty patients with idiopathic epilepsy and tic disorders
 group 2:
Thirty patients with idiopathic epilepsy without tic disorders.
The Conner’s ADHD parent rating scale, Child Behavioral Checklist, The Arabic version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory version 4.0 and Antistreptolysin O titre measurement (ASOT) by latex agglutination technique were used.
The quality of life of epileptic patients with tics was lower than that of epileptic patients without tics. The combined type of ADHD was significantly higher in epileptic patients with tics than that of epileptic patients without tics. Epilepsy with tics patient were found as having more ADHD problem, oppositional problem, somatic problem, thought problem and attention problem in comparison to those without tics.
The ASOT level is not correlated to presence of tics in epileptic patient.
