Abstract

Loss of renal function requiring hemodialysis leads to dramatic life changes that would expected to be stressful and to require major coping efforts. The child‘s ability to cope with the disease influenced by many factors such as the quality of family relationship, life development stage, cultural values, beliefs, communications, technological development and economic status (Ghamari-Zareh et al., 2010).
This study was aimed to assess caregiver awareness regarding children undergoing hemodialysis through:
 Assessing needs and problems among children undergoing hemodialysis.
 Assessing caregiver knowledge regarding renal failure and hemodialysis.
 Assessing caregiver practices related to care of their children undergoing hemodialysis.
Research question
 Is there a relation between caregiver’s knowledge and health status of their children?  Is there a relation between caregiver’s practices and health status of their children?
Study setting
The study was conducted in the hemodialysis unite at children hospital (Sidnawy hospital) at Zagazig University hospital.
Subject
The subject of this study was convenient sample composed of 107 children with acute and chronic renal failure (males and females) who are attending hemodialysis sessions study and data was gathered over a 6 months period from the previously mentioned setting and their caregiver.
Technical design
Tools of data collection
Data collected through used the following tools:
First tool: A structured Interviewing Sheet: this tool was designed by the investigator and written in simple Arabic language based on scientific literature review to gather data in relation to the following parts:
I. Socio-demographic characteristic of children as age, gender, educational level.II. Socio-demographic characteristic of caregiver as (age, sex, economic status, their jobs, and educational level).
III. Past and present history of the disease including onset and duration and complication of the disease and duration of hemodialysis.
IV. Health needs of children undergoing hemodialysis.
V. Health problems of children undergoing hemodialysis.
VI. Assessing caregiver knowledge toward their children undergoing hemodialysis.
VII. Assessing caregiver practice for care of their children undergoing hemodialysis.
Content and Face Validity and Reliability:
It was ascertained by a group of the experts in field of community nursing to test its content validity, reliability will be tested statistically.
Results:-
Finding of the current study can summarized as the following:
 The mean age of the children undergoing hemodialysis was 8.4±1.6. and 56.1% of them was male. 26.2% of the mother age between 35-40 years old with mean 36.2±2.5 and 40.2% of them was secondary education.
 64.5% of the studied children had unsatisfied health needs.
 83.2% of the studied children had health problems.
 62.6% of the studied care caregivers had incorrect practices.
 55.1% of the studied care caregivers had satisfactory knowledge.
 There is statistically significant difference between caregiver’s practices and health problems of their children at p < 0. 05.
 There is statistically significant difference between caregiver’s knowledge and health problems of their children at p < 0. 05.
 There is highly statistically significant difference between caregiver’s practices and health needs of their children at p < 0. 01.
 There is statistically significant difference between caregiver’s knowledge and health needs of their children at p < 0. 05. There is positive correlation between caregiver’s knowledge and practices regarding to care of their children with statistical statistically significant differences (P <0.05).
