Abstract

The presence of iron and manganese are probably the most common water problem facing consumers. So, the present research work aims at the:
1- Evaluation the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide in the removal of iron and manganese from water,
2- Determination of the optimal conditions as pH, concentration, contact time to remove iron and manganese from the water,
3- Studying the change of temperature and total dissolved solids by using hydrogen peroxide to remove iron and manganese from water.
The study covered the following points:
 Chapter 1: Introduction & Research Objectives: It includes a general introduction of the importance of water, sources of pollutants. Also, the objectives of this study have been explained.
 Chapter 2: Literature Review: Include a survey about the methods used for heavy metals removal from water.
 Chapter 3: Materials and Methods: This chapter described the chemicals, instruments, methods of analysis, preparation of samples, preparation of stock solution and experimental procedure has been reviewed.
 Chapter 4: Results and Discussion: in this chapter the results for each contact time, pH, concentration of hydrogen peroxide, other parameters has been presented. The summary of results of this study as below:
68
 The average of removal of iron from the prepared water with Hydrogen peroxide using 0, 0.1, 1,3, 5, 10 and 20 ppm of H2O2 in different contact time were 3.6, 85.1, 86.3, 89.5, 92.4, 93.9 and 95.6 % respectively, while average of manganese removal was 5.6, 56.3, 57.4, 58.9, 60.0, 61.6 and 63.3 % respectively. These ratios, maximum, minimum and standard division calculated using SPSS v20 software.
 The study results have proved that the removal of Iron and manganese from water using hydrogen peroxide was effective. The removal ratio increased with the increasing in contact time. Hydrogen peroxide had a very slight effect on pH changes. The average of pH changes was from 7.40 to 7.32. Also, the change in both total dissolved solids and temperature were very slight. The results obtained from real samples show that hydrogen peroxide can be used effectively in the removal of iron and manganese from water.
