Abstract

Infection is considered the second cause of death in patients with ESRD (the first is cardiovascular disease) and septicemia accounts for more than 75% of these infectious deaths. Annual death rates due to pneumonia and sepsis are markedly higher in dialysis patients compared with the general population.
Health care-associated infections lead to death, disability and excess medical costs.
The aim of the study was to assess infection control measures in hemodialysis units.
In order to do that we gave a questionnaire in (9) hemodialysis units in Ismailia governorate.
Our results showed that the percent of working machines to total machines in different dialysis units was ranging from 63% up to 100% of working machines in the majority of studied units (6/9).
In our study we found (generally) that the most of dialysis units are in large percent clean in general. The medical team does not commit enough to wash hands despite the availability of disinfectants and also there is no commitment to use personal protective equipments .
The studied units showed satisfactory percentage in all points regarding methods for preventing pollution except commitment of the medical team to aseptic non touch technique in most of units.
All the studied units were very good in all items regarding environmental cleansing, but there was a clear error in the lack of separation between storage areas and the patient treatment area & dealing with blood stains in most of units.
We found that all the studied units were ideal in dealing with furniture and sheets & recording data , but there was a lot of mistakes in dealing with waste products in most units.
