Abstract

Open heart surgery may be a stressful experience for the patients physically and psychologically. The reason for stress while undergoing major cardiac surgery may be due to fear an anxiety on the outcomes of the surgery. Aim of study: the study was aimed to assess the biopsychosocial needs for patients undergoing open heart surgery. Study design: Descriptive exploratory design was utilized in this study. Setting: The study was conducted in cardio thoracic intensive care unit and cardio thoracic surgical department at Damietta cardio-gastroenterology center. Subjects: Purposive sample of 95 patients that admitted in cardio thoracic intensive care unit and cardio thoracic surgical department within a period of six months and met the selective criteria were included in the study sample. Data collection: Data were collected by two tools: Interviewing questionnaire and Biopsychosocial needs questionnaire. Results: ther were 28.4% and 41.1% of patients under study had physical needs before and after operation, while 16.8 % and 50.5%, of patients under study had psychological needs before and after operation and 54.7% and 61.1 of studied patients had social dysfunction before operation and after operation. Regarding patient knowledage about open heart surgery were 34.7% of studied patients had satisfactory level of knowledge while 65.3% of studied patients had unsatisfactory score of knowledge regarding open heart surgery before operation. The study concluded that: Regarding total physical needs among studied patients, it was found that one fourth of studied patients before operation and two fifths of studied patients after operations had physical needs. Regarding total psychological needs, one fifth of studied patients compared to one half of studied patients had psychological needs before and after operations. Also about half of studied patients had social needed before operation compared to three fifth of studied patients after opertaion. More than half patients under study had unstatisfied score of knowledage regarding open heart surgery. The study recommended that: Patient undergoing open heart surgery are in need of simplified illustrated and comperhensive arabic booklet including information about open heart surgery at pre and post operative period.
