Abstract Mental retardation(MR)refers to sub-average general intellectual functioning which originates during the development period of the child and is associated with impairment in adaptive behavior.It is a condition of incomplete development of the mind,which is generally characterized by impairment of skills, and is manifested during the development period.Prevention is better than cure. Prevention of mental retardation refers to the measures taken at the early stage to decimate the disability.Maternal and Child Health centers(MCH) are mostly the ideal place where the majority of children younger than 5 years of age are seen and are ideal for developmental and behavioral screening.Through nurse’s work in homes and child health care and other community settings,community health nurse provide direct health care at levels, and maintaining links between individuals families,communities and the rest of the health care system. Nurses have a vital role in MCH centers, and therefore, they should be prepared to deliver all types of care, including measures for disability prevention and early detection. Therefore, it isnecessary to implement educational programfor nurses working in MCH centers on early detection and prevention of mental retardation to increase their knowledge, practice regarding mental retardation.Aim of the studyThe aim of this study was to evaluate health education program for nurses working at Maternal and Child Health Centers on early detection and prevention of mental retardation. |
