Abstract

Back ground
Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological conditions. The impact of epilepsy extends well beyond the direct effects of seizures and includes a number of challenges, which may lead to disability and severely reduced quality of life Aim: This study aimed to assess the factors affecting quality of life for patients with epilepsy. Setting: This study was conducted at the epileptic outpatient clinics in Ain Shams University Hospital /Cairo / Egypt. Subject: A purposive sample of (100) Adult epileptic patients, from both sex and free from others chronic diseases. Data collection Tools :I- A structured interview questionnaire for patients with epilepsy .II- seizure severity questionnaire. III-Quality of life assessment questionnaire. Results: the present study revealed that43% of the studied patients had low quality of life. There were statistically significant relations between total Quality of life and the followed study variables including demographic characteristics (patients’ age, marital status, educational level, income, residence, type of work); total knowledge; family history; all aspect of present history; seizure severity and compliance with therapeutic regimen. Conclusion:Total quality of life was good only among one quarter of the studied epileptic patients. Also, the dimensions of QOL affected consecutively were financial, functional, psychological, social and finally physically .Recommendations. Health education program about disease and its treatment modalities should be provided for epileptic patients to improve their QOL.
