Abstract

The samples were collected to cover the study area and analyzed for grain size TOC and some heavy metals Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr. And to get more information on the contamination statues of the sediments and to evaluate the extent of heavy metals pollution in the area and its link to the contamination sources and sediment type.
The study highlighted on the accumulation and extension border of different distribution sediment types which represented into four seabed classes. This distribution of sediment type along the study area may be related to water depth, seafloor geomorphology and habitat complexity. The output data indicates a close correspondence between the acoustic pattern and the main sediment characteristics. Grain size analysis was performed on12 sediment samples. Apparently, sediment in these samples is sand fractions. The samples were characterized by the presence of rocks and some mollusks. Most of the samples were characterized by high percentage of sand while, the silt percentage was high only in sample 4.
The highest concentration of the heavy metals in all samples was iron and was recorded on the Eastern side of the harbor (2775ppm).The lowest concentration was the Eastern entrance of the harbor that lies in the outlet of the harbor where it is fare from any source of pollution that may increase the iron concentration in the sediments. This may be attributed to the high percentage of sand as well as the low Percentage of TOC. On the other hand, high values (236, 143 for Zn, 204, 95 for Cu) were found in the sediments of stations (8, 9 and 9, 8) respectively, in the vicinity of small sewers which were carry mixed waste discharge from nearby industries and domestic sewage which was pumped in the past. In addition, the vicinity of shipyards and the anchorage of fishing boats indicate the high degree of Zn contamination. This study also focuses on the evaluation of the total concentration of heavy metal concentrations in the Eastern harbor. Actually, the assessment criteria (Igeo, EF, PLI, ERL and ERM) showed that the sediments status is near to acceptable low levels except for Zn and Cu that shows medium contamination levels.
The toxicity guidelines of heavy metals in sediments of samples showed that none of metal concentrations in the sediments of the samples was as high as above ERM values. All the samples fall in the range below ERL (12 samples) for both of Ni and Cr. This is indicates that the sediments were rarely associated with biological effects. Most of the samples fall in the range below ERL for both Zn and Cu (11 and 10) samples respectively. Only (1 and 2) samples fall in the range between ERL and ERM for both Zn and Cu respect.
