Abstract

Melatonin can exert a positive effect on different health related problems in children with cerebral palsy, not only being of great importance for normal circadian sleep, but also it can affect both children and care givers life style.
The aim of this study was to assess the role of melatonin supplementation in Epilepsy control, sleep disorders, GIT related problems and growth in patients with cerebral palsy.
The study was conducted on 30 CP patients following up in Pediatric Neurology Clinic, Children’s hospital, Ain Shams University.
All the included patients were subjected to; careful history taking, thorough clinical examination and were classified according to GMFCS classification.
Melatonin was supplemented in dose of 3mg/day, forty five minutes before bed time for 3 months, and the following studied items were assessed at enrollment and after the 3 months of melatonin supplementation.
Epilepsy severity was assessed based on Chalfont epilepsy severity score and EEG. Sleep related problems were recorded via Polysomnography and Sleep questionnaire by the care giver. As regarding GIT problems, GERD was assessed based on GERQ GERD score, while constipation was assessed using Rome III criteria.
Finally, growth was followed up using both special growth charts for CP children and ultrasound muscle volume assessment.
