Abstract

In this study, three nonionic surface active agents were prepared through two step reactions. The first is the reaction between sebacic acid and 4-amino antipyrine to produce the corresponding amide. Then the reaction between the prepared amide and poly ethylene glycols with different molecular weights of 400, 600 and 2000 g/mole.
The chemical structures of the prepared nonionic compounds were characterized using infra-red spectroscopic analysis and proton magnetic resonance.
The spectroscopic analysis data were confirmed the expected chemical structures of the prepared compounds as represented in the following Scheme.
Then, the surface activities of the prepared nonionic surface active agents were determined using surface tension, interfacial tension, emulsification power measurements. The data of the surface tension were used to determine the values of the critical micelle concentrations, maximum surface excess and average minimum surface area at the interface.
The measurements showed the good surface activities of the prepared surface active agents at the different temperatures. Also, their surface activities depend on their chemical structures.
The prepared compounds were evaluated as corrosion inhibitors for protection of carbon steel against corrosion in acidic medium.
The evaluation was performed using gravimetric analysis, electrochemical polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
The results of the gravimetric measurements showed that the inhibition efficiencies of the prepared inhibitors were increased by increasing the inhibitors concentrations and also by increasing the immersion time. That was attributed to the increase of the adsorbed amounts of the inhibitors at the metal surface.
The electrochemical polarization and electrochemical impedance measurements showed comparative results to the gravimetric measurements.
The thesis showed the availability of the application of the prepared nonionic surfactants in protection of the carbon steel fabrications during processing in acidic medium.
