Abstract

Low back pain (LBP) is a common health issue affecting at least 80 % of individuals during their lifetime (Hoy et al., 2010).
One of the main characteristics of LBP is recurrence, and a number of patients develop chronic LBP (Takura et al., 2015).
CLBP in particular is often co-morbid with depression (Tetsunaga et al., 2013).
Thus, in chronic pain, psychosocial risk factors become relevant, and are important to explain how individuals respond to back pain. Recent studies have demonstrated that psychosocial factors are important risk factors for LBP (Kawaguchi et al., 2015).
The present study aimed to assess if there is association between depression and functional disability in chronic low back pain patients.
Accordingly 50 patients with chronic low back pain lasting for more than 6 months {25males& 25females}.The age of the study sampled patients range from 20-71 years. The results of the study showed the following:
Pain intensity by VAS had a mean of (5.38 ± 2.42) and Total Oswestry Disability had a mean of (18.66 ± 7.26). 66 % of patients had moderate to severe disability.
Pain intensity by VAS was positively highly significantly correlated with Total Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (P<0.001).
Significant positive correlation was found between age and pain intensity as well as disability.
Pain intensity & disability were found to increase with increasing BMI, yet not reaching statistical significance.
A significant difference was found between pain (VAS) and disability with sex, being higher in the female group.
Positive moderate correlation was found between BDI form one side with VAS and ODI form other side with.
As the degree of disability increases, the degrees of depression increase. This correlation is highly significant.
