Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of using Neuro Linguistic Programming on developing oral communication skills of first level prospective engineers studying at the Higher Institutes of Engineering and Technology. Based on related literature and a panel of jury members’ point of view, the study adopted the quasi-experimental design, and three instruments were constructed to fulfill the purpose of the study. An oral communication questionnaire was used to identify the most appropriate skills for this stage and particular specialization. Then, a pre/post test was prepared to determine the effectiveness of the treatment, and a rubric was used to grade participants’ speaking skills as measured by the pre/post test. The participants of the study were sixty male and female prospective engineers enrolled at the Higher Institute of Engineering and Technology located in New Damietta. They were randomly assigned into two groups; the experimental group which was taught via Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques, and the control group that was taught via the traditional method. Results revealed that the total variance of oral communication skills for the participants in the experimental group is 90% due to the effect of using the treatment. This means that the program was effective on developing students’ oral communication skills as there were statistically significant differences between the pre and post administration of the test in favor of the latter. The researcher recommends that during the teaching of oral communication skills, students should be provided with a relaxing, effective, and interactive environment that fosters interaction and helps to develop students’ oral communication skills.
