Abstract

Dementia affects cognitive functions and affected
people need special care. Stroke is a disabling problem in
itself. While post stroke dementia is an additional disability.
Preventive measures are best to be taken is such
condition. Therefore, an updated study for assessment of
variables assumed to predict dementia after stroke is
needed.
This observational follow up study included 100
patients of first ever ischemic stroke admitted in stroke
units in Ain Shams University Hospitals.
Designed sheet, collecting data about age, sex, years
of education hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart diseases,
smoking and imaging, obtained from medical records.
Physical activity the year before stroke onset assessed by
GPAQ. Language proficiency and experience assessed by
BLP. Mini mental state examination used to asses’ cognitive
status at stroke onset and 3 months after stroke.
According to cognitive status 3 months after stroke,
patients were divided into no cognitive impairment group,
mild cognitive impairment group and dementia. With their
relation with the above variables.

We found significant results with age, current
smoking, hypertension, heart diseases, physical activity
level and Arabic language proficiency level.
Cognitive impairment was associated with anterior
and mixed circulation affection not with posterior
circulation.
We found no gender differences, no relation with
years of education or more than one language experience.
further studies are need with more refined criteria and
assessment parameters especially IQ and educational levelin Egypt
