Abstract

This study was undertaken to evaluate the nutritional status of diabetic children. The study was
carried out at the Juvenile Diabetic Clinics in Abu :El Reesh and El Demerda h hospitals in Cairo
and El Talaba as well as El Shatby hospitals
in Alex. The sample size was 153 diabetic children (74 males and 79 females), their ages ranged
between 2-14 years who attended the diabetic children out patient clinic. To evaluate the
nutritional status, 24-h recall method was used.
The results revealed that more than half of the diabetic children (62.7%) of the total sample had
energy less than 90% of the RDA. The majority of diabetic children at all age groups had more
than RDA for total protein intake. Animal protein was less than 50% of total protein in most of
diabetic children.
There was an mcrease in total energy intake in Alex. group compared with Cairo group at all age
groups except the age group (2-3) years. It was noticed that protein and fat intake was higher in
Alex. group than Cairo group especially at age group (2-3) years.
About % of the total sample (75.8%) had their weight for height within normal, while 22.2% of all
diabetic children were over weight. The majority of diabetic children (81.7%)
of the total sample had their height for age more than 90% of
standard.
The present study revealed significant correlation’s between the socio-economic level and energy
and fat intake. There was a highly significant positive correlation’s between glycosylated
hemoglobin and energy, carbohydrate and fat intake. There was statistically significant negative
correlation between duration of diabetes and weight for height but no significant correlation with
height for age.
