Abstract

Some herbs and seeds are rich in bioactive food components and have therapeutic properties in menopause in preventing changes in hormonal status that related for osteoporosis after menopause. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention phytoestrogen on the reduction and management postmenopausal symptoms, lipid profile and improve antioxidant status in aging female rats. This experiment was designed to study the effect of seeds (flaxseed& sesame) and herbs (vitex agnus-castus&hypericum perforatum) on eighty-four of the female postmenpausal rats. The experiment was applied on eighty four female Sprague Dawley rats. Seventy seven aged female rats and seven young female acted as model of negative control rat group. Rats were divided into -ve control group and postmenopausal rats which divided into +ve control, groups 3, 4, 5, 6&7 that treated with flaxseed, sesame, vitex, hypericum and experimental seeds & herbs mixture powder (15 g /100g /in basal diet) and groups 8,9,10,11,12 that treated with flaxseed, sesame, vitex, hypericum and experimental seeds & herbs mixture extract at 1300 mg/kg b.w daily by stomach tube.
The experiment period was 60 days. The obtained results revealed that seeds and herbs contain highest amount of phenolic compounds catechein, gallic, pyrogallol and e-vanillic and flavonoids especially ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid and traces of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The biological study showed that consumption of herbs and seeds powder or extract showed significant increase in body weight gain (BWG), feed efficiency ratio (FER), serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol, (HDLc), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH),estradiol (E2),and Progesterone(P4) (p< 0.01)and significant decrease in total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides(TG),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDLc) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol(VLDLc) and testosterone hormone(p< 0.01 & 0.001) comparing with the (+ve) control rat groups. It could be concluded that consumption of seeds (flaxseed, sesame), herbs (vitex agnus-castus, hypericum perforatum) and a mixture of them have a best significant treatment of symptoms in aged menopausal female rats. The study recommends the introduction of these seeds and herbs within the diet plan for menopausal women for its their health effects in reducing the symptoms in aged menopausal.
