Abstract

The aim of this work is evaluation of the conservation value of the selected islands and determining the future use and evaluates the suitability of these islands as protected sites. The Nile river islands protected area covering a total area of 160 Km2-114 islands are scattered along the River Nile in Egypt -was instituted by prime Ministerial decree 1969 in 1998, in according with law 102 of 1983 about the protected areas.
the main land use in all islands is Agriculture within average cover in islands by approximately from 20% to 98%, the main land use in all islands is Agriculture within average cover in islands by approximately from 20% to 98%.
Vegetation Checklist includes 157 species of plants have been assessed for Nile river islands, The main habitats on which these species depend are temporary and permanent marshes and rivers, as well as temporary ponds and permanent lakes. Out of the 157 species assessed in selected islands only 6 species are threatened at regional level , 2 species are Vulnerable (VU), one species are Endangered (EN) and 3 are Critically Endangered (CR). Over half (64.1%) are not threatened (DD), with 28.2% in the Least Concern category (LC) and four species in the Near Threatened category (NT). The Cyperus papyrus was recorded in three islands. Fifty two bird species are recorded (twenty two resident and thirty migrants’ species).
Fifty two water samples were collected once seasonally (winter, autumn, spring and summer) from the River Nile which located near selected islands. The main pollution source along the study area is Omar-Bek drain . The results of those comparisons are combined to provide a water quality ranking , the calculated WQI for the water samples along the Nile decrease towards the northern islands.
About the evaluation of the islands Most areas along the Nile river islands with relatively large native vegetation cover have significant wildlife values. About Ranking of critical Islands, Gamgara Island has the first rank then El Atef Island while Kafer El Mayasra Island has a last rank.
There are three strategies for islands protected area design and put perfect system of environmental management: Supporting the manage , Nature conservation and restoration. Supporting local people
