Abstract

Providing fresh water resources suitable for modern life development is a great challenge that Egypt faces in the coming period. The shortage problem of fresh water and attention now is moving to try to take advantage of the non-conventional sources of water such as desalination of sea water or sewage treatment, and others. The most important phase is of water treatment is to remove heavy metals such as copper, cadmium and chromium, and others. The work presented preparation of a number of polymeric micro and nano-gels depend on iron oxide which covered by two types of polymers such as P(AMPS) modified β-CD (natural polymer) and their magnetic counterparts which have the ability to extract heavy metals in the water. The study included the efficiency of composites synthesized in copper and lead removal from aqueous solution and that this efficiency was less or more rely on the used application conditions. These composites were characterized by XRD, FTIR, TGA and TEM. The study showed that the efficiency of nano- composites and that of micro-composites in extracting copper and other metals exist due to mechanical difference. The results showed that efficiency of the composites prepared in decreasing the concentration of heavy metals in water to the extent that it permits the use of this water to irrigate plants in the streets and parks, which provides a great amount of water wasted in these purposes.
