Abstract

T
his was a cross-sectional study aiming at estimating the prevalence of FGIDs among school children in Cairo. A school based survey was conducted over 697 children aged between 5 – 15 years in the period from September 2015 till December 2015. Mean age of surveyed children was 8 years, with slight male predominance. Monthly income per capita ranged from 100 – 4500 EGP (with median of 2000 and interquartile range of 1000 – 3000 EGP) and mean number of family members was 4.81. Almost two thirds of parents (66%) had high education and the majority of mothers (55.8%) were unemployed while most of fathers (58.7%) were skilled workers.
FGIDs were diagnosed in 56.8 % of studied children with aerophagia being the most common diagnosis (19.7%) followed by IBS (18.3%). Combined FGIDs were encountered in 20.8% of cases with aerophagia and IBS being the most common combination (6.4%).
Several factors were significantly associated with an FGID diagnosis, including; family structure and household –related factors such as order of birth, number of family members, and absence of one parent as well as parental education and paternal occupation that reflected on income per capita.
Keywords: FGIDs; aerophagia
