Abstract
The study aimed to assess the effects of electronic medication administration record on medication administration and assess common Obstacles during recording the electronic medication administration Research design: A descriptive research design was used in this study. Setting: The study was conducted in two of in-patient department at in Children Cancer Hospital Egypt (57357). Research Subject: A purposive sample composed 100 nurses working with pediatric oncology patient nurses which responsible for providing nursing care and document medication administration by electronic medication administration record in the previously mentioned setting. Tools of data collection: Two tools were used; an Interviewing questionnaire sheet to assess nurses’ knowledge regarding to electronic medication administration record and observational checklist to assess the nurses’ actual practice regarding to electronic medication administration record. Results: The study revealed that all of the studied nurses had satisfactory knowledge level regarding electronic medication administration record, in additional to more than half of them had competent practice level. Conclusion: The current study concluded that, electronic medication administration record increase accuracy of medication administration thought maintaining the rights of medication administration include right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, right time, right documentation and decrease medication administration errors with using of bar-coding scanner which help nurse in right patient identification and medication verification before medication administration, also concluded that the common pitfalls during utilization of electronic medication administration record slowness of computers is a major obstacle, difficulty to scan medication barcode as another obstacle, and computers are not working efficiently. Recommendation: The study recommended that computerized provider order entry by physician not by pharmacist to decrease error and nurses ’effort in comparing between written physician order and electronic medical record, pharmacy fixing problems in scanning medication which were common pitfalls during utilization of electronic medication administration record, integration between electronic medical record and pyxies machine to help nurse for using of bar coding electronic medication administration record to all medication and published of electronic medical record in all Egyptian hospitals especially pediatric hospitals.
