Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women. It is the leading cause of death and is diagnosed most often in women over 50 years of age, but can affect younger women. The cause of breast cancer has not established and many risk factors have been identified (Greenwald, 2012).
The most common risk factor is a history of breast cancer in a first- degree on maternal side. The risk nearly doubles if the relative was pre-menopausal and almost trebles if the cancer was bilateral, or there was more than one first degree relative who was pre-menopausal (Andrew, 2013).
The aim of the study was to assess the women knowledge and reported practice toward breast cancer and breast self-examination, increase public awareness about how to do breast self-examination (BSE) and the importance of women screening services for breast cancer.
The study was carried out on all women attending outpatient of women health hospital at Assiut governorate.
The sample were included in this study consisted of (456) clients, for data collection the tool was used an interview questionnaire sheet included the following:
A- Socio demographic data (Age, marital status, Occupation, education and place of residence).
Medical history: presence of disease (Breast Cancer), Time of Starting the disease, family history of disease and primary sign of the disease.
C-Obstetric history: Age at first menarche, menstrual history, age at first delivery.
D- Knowledge regarding meaning of breast cancer, causes, sign/ symptoms, methods of early diagnosis, side effects, prognosis and follow up, knowledge about source information, e.g. radio, T.V., friends and family, hearing any information about breast self examination
Each item is divided into satisfactory or un satisfactory.
E- Reported practice toward early detection & prevention of breast cancer.
