summary
This thesis presents Mesopotamian temples in the Hellenistic period: Uruk- Babylon Seleucia of Tigris in the light of architecture of Mesopotamia . This study is inspired by Rostovtzzef’s question when he asked his reader in his article how far did the Greeks hellenize Mesopotamia? however, the lack of evidence at that time made it difficult to say how far did the Greeks hellenize Mesopotamia. Now after the excavations and the surveys of the sites of Mesopotamia conducted there we can answer the question of Rostovttzef, thus my study is dedicated to solve these problems.
There are some cities which flourished under the rule of Seleucids. First , Uruk which has strong claim to be considered the oldest city in the world it existed before the third century. It is one of the most religious cities. there are many gods in Uruk such as Anu who became the most important deity in the Hellenistic period. also, goddess Ishtar and Nana are still worshipped in this period but less important than Anu.
The second city that flourished under the Seleucids is Babylon. Several political and military events took place there. It was one of the most religious cities in Mesopotamia. Complex Esagila was the important temple in that period.
