Abstract

A Total of 40 normal male albino (Sprague-Dawley) rats. The animals were divided into 4 groups the first group (group I) Rats served as control group and received com¬mercial balanced diet all over the experimental period (8 weeks), (group II): Diabetic control rats that received HFD for 6 weeks then injected STZ (25 mg/ kg b.w /i.p.) and served as control diabetic group all over the experimental period (8 weeks), (group III):diabetic rats treated with metformin at a dose 500 mg /kg bw/day by oral gavage for the whole experimental period (8 weeks) and (group IV):diabetic rats treated with cinnamon water extract at a dose 5 ml each rat daily by oral gavage for the whole experimental period (8weeks).
This study included hematological parameters, serum biochemical parameters, immunological parameters and histopathological examination of liver, kidney and pancreas associated with each group.
The most important results in this study include hematological examination of STZ induced diabetic group (II) revealed microcytic hypochromic anemia with neutrophilic leukocytosis. While revealed decrease in platelet count. This compared with control healthy group.
Hematological examination of metformin and cinnamon treated groups (III& IV) revealed increase and improvement in RBCs count, Hb concentration, PCV value, MCV, MCH and MCHC value and platelets count compared with STZ induced diabetic group (II). Also, revealed decrease in T.L.C, neutrophil count with increase of lymphocytes, monocytes and eosinophil’s count compared with diabetic group (II).
In the diabetic group showed high HbA1C levels compared with control group while metformin and cinnamon treated groups showed decrease the elevated levels of HbA1C levels when compared withthe diabetic group.
Serum biochemical examination of STZ induced diabetic group (II) revealed decrease in serum insulin hormone and subsequently significant increase in fasting blood sugar levels when compared with control group and lead to destruction of beta cells as a result injection of STZ .
On the other hand, diabetic rats treated with metformin and cinnamon showed significant increase in serum insulin hormone and decrease of fasting blood sugar levels when compared with the diabetic group.
The present study of serum biochemical parameters demonstrated a very highly elevation in the serum level of ALT and AST of diabetic group throughout the experiment.
Regarding the liver enzymes (ALT, AST) activities in the diabetic treated groups (metformin and cinnamon) revealed decrease in both groups.
There were decrease in serum total protein and albumin in the diabetic group when compared with control group. While total protein and albumin in the serum of diabetic rats treated with metformin and cinnamon showed significant increase when compared with the diabetic group.
We recorded an increase in the level of blood urea nitrogen and creatinine in the diabetic group compared to normal control group, this proves that diabetes lead to renal dysfunction.
Regarding to blood urea nitrogen, creatinine in the serum of diabetic rats treated with metformin and cinnamon showed significant decrease compared with diabetic group.
In this study the lipid profile of the STZ induced diabetic group showed increase in TC, TG and LDL-C decrease in HDL-C levels in the STZ induced diabetic group when compared with control group. On the other hand both metformin treated groups showed decrease in TC, TG and LDL-C levels and increase in HDL-C level when compared with the diabetic group.
The study included the immunological parameters results of the STZ induced diabetic group (II) showed increase in both serum TNF- α, IL-6 and CRP level when compared with control group. On the other hand both metformin and cinnamon treated groups showed improvement and decrease of TNF-α, IL-6 and CRP levels.
