Abstract

The present study deals with the taxonomy and ecology of 101 Recent foraminifera species identified from 63 samples collected from four nearshore areas (18 samples from Ras Al Bar nearshore area, 12 samples from Damietta Port nearshore area, 24 samples from New Damietta and Gamasa nearshore area, 9 samples from Baltim nearshore area.)
The taxonomy of the recognized species has been revised according to the most recent classification scheme of Loeblich & Tappan (1988). The occurrence of the species, as recorded in previous literatures on Recent foraminifera in Egypt and in some significant works on the Middle East, have been discussed and their taxonomy has been updated. All species are illustrated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) pictures.
Some significant characteristics of the Ras Al Bar, Damietta Port, New Damietta and Gamasa and Baltim nearshore area ecosystems have been highlighted. The four areas chosen for this study represent disturbed shallow water environments in the Mediterranean coast of Egypt (depth ranges between 0 and 10 m).
The Ras Al Bar nearshore area
The Damietta Port nearshore area
The New Damietta & Gamasa nearshore area
The Baltim nearshore area
The ecology of the foraminifera is represented by distribution maps for different taxa. the higher concentrations of foraminifera are found in relatively deep parts of the investigated areas especially in protected parts of areas, where agitation is a minimum.
The ecology of the foraminiferal fauna was also studied using the statistical methods (cluster analyses and analyses of variance)
the pollution by heavy and trace metals in this area was studied, more than 60 samples were chosen for the analysis for the following elements: (Al), (As), (Ba), (Mn), (Pb), (Sr) (v), (p), (s), (Hg), (Cd), (Co), (Cr), (Cu), (Fe), (Li), (Ti), (Mo), (Se) and (Zn).
