Abstract
Introduction: Pancreatitis is a potentially fatal disease that requires nutritional support which is considered a primary issue in the therapy of the disease.
Aims: to highlight the role of enteral nutrition in comparison with parenteral nutrition in pancreatitis.
Summary: Optimal nutritional support in acute pancreatitis has been a subject of debate for decades. Enteral nutrition was believed to aggravate inflammation through pancreatic stimulation,and parenteral nutritional support was believed to avoid pancreatic stimulation and provide the needed nutritional components. The optimal route of enteral nutrition remains unclear, but normal or nasogastric tube feeding seems safe when tolerated.
Conclusion: Enteral nutrition has proven to be superior to parenteral nutrition due to decreased systemic infections, multi-organ failure, mortality and surgical intervention rate.
