Abstract Accurate and reliable measurement of prostate volume is crucial for the management of prostate diseases. It is important not only for benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH), but also in planning nonsurgical therapies of prostate cancers and follow-ups. Although it is accepted that TRUS is superior to pelvic ultrasound in the evaluation of the prostate, pelvic ultrasound is used more commonly in the measurement of prostate dimensions. There are many factors that may interfere with the accuracy of pelvic ultrasound & TRUS in estimation of prostate size and configuration. In our study, we evaluated the accuracy of pelvic ultrasound in estimation of prostate size & configuration in comparison to TRUS. We also evaluated the factors that could affect the accuracy of pelvic ultrasound examination of the prostate in comparison to TRUS namely body mass index (BMI) and degree of bladder fullness. |
