Abstract

The goal of antenatal care (ANC) is to ensure that gestational outcomes end in the birth of a healthy baby without adversely affecting the health of the mother. This is achieved by: detection and early treatment of problems and complications; prevention of complications and diseases; health promotion, preparation for childbirth and potential complications.
As early and regular attendance of the pregnant mother to the antenatal clinic for health supervision is very important, and is imperative for high risk group as well as poor antenatal care is an important risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes among women, so compliance to antenatal care is one way of improving maternal health, which is related to the fifth Millennium Development Goals.
The aim of the study:-
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of mothers’ compliance to ante natal care on pregnancy outcome through: -
1) Assessing mothers’ compliance to antenatal care.
2) Assessing the factors which affect mothers’ compliance to antenatal care.
3) Identifying the relationship between mothers’ compliance to antenatal care and pregnancy outcome.

A retrospective descriptive design was used in this study to fulfill the study aim.
» Setting of the study: -
This study was conducted at the five maternal health centers in Tanta city namely, said Medical Center, El Salam Medical Center, First Tanta Child Care, Second Tanta Child Care, Fourth Tanta Child Care.
» Sampling: -
A purposive sample was used based on the exclusive criteria which are free from chronic medical or gynecological health problem of selected woman at morning shift only.
Size: - size of the sample was calculated by the relative to the total number of the pregnant women in each of the five centers for the first visit in the years (2010, 2011and 2012). The sample size was 290.

An interviewing questionnaire sheet was designed by the researcher to collect data about:-
Socio demographic characteristics for mothers such as age, educational level, marital status, occupation.
 Summary
Obstetric history such as number of gravidity, number of parity, number of abortion, type of previous labour, health problem with previous pregnancy and laboure, outcome of
previous labour.
Mothers’ knowledge about antenatal care including important of antenatal care schedule of visits, time of first visit, important of nutrition and balanced diet, sources of food and
life style during pregnancy.
Level of mothers’ compliance to antenatal care including time of first visit, follow up schedule of visits, measuring weight , blood pressure , urine and blood investigations , vaccination, nutrition and life style practice during pregnancy.
Pregnancy outcome including place of birth, birth attendant, type of birth, time of birth, new born status, new born weight, complication during labour, and health problem during pregnancy.
Results revealed the following: -
1- The majority of mothers were housewives (83.7 %), and also (97.0%) married while only (20.0%) were university educated and (43.0%) secondary educated.
2- More than half of mothers (56.7%) were at twenty years and about (30.0%) were at thirty years.

3- About (36.7%) of mothers had good knowledge about antenatal care while (32.7%) had poor knowledge and only (30.7%) had average knowledge.
4- The study showed that there is highly significance relationship between mothers’ compliance to antenatal care and pregnancy outcome through the following results, (59.3%) were good compliant with antenatal care compared to (67.7%) of mothers had favorable outcome, while (32.3%) had un favorable outcome compared to (28.7%) were poor compliant and only (12.0%) were average compliant.
