Abstract

Literature survey revealed that genus Urtica has great reputation for its anticancer, immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties.
These activities are attributed to the presence of biologically active secondary metabolites including polyphenols, polysaccharides, flavonoids, lignans, coumarins and steroidal components. Because of many types of cancers that are widely spread nowadays, we focused our phytochemical study on the cytotoxicity of the different extracts and fractions of Urtica urens and isolation of constituents from the most active cytotoxic fractions of this species. This thesis consists of three parts:
<Part I: In-vitro cytotoxicity screening of Urtica urens extracts and fractions.
Part II: Cytotoxic activity directed phytochemical investigation of Urtica urens.
Part III: Molecular identification and DNA fingerprinting of Urtica urens and Urtica pilulifera.
<Part I: In-vitro cytotoxicity screening of Urtica urens extracts and fractions
The cytotoxic activity of the different aerial and root extracts and fractions of Urtica urens was examined in comparison to the standard doxorubicin against three different cell lines representing the most common types of cancer (Prostate carcinoma cell line PC-3, Hepatocellular carcinoma cell line HepG-2 and Colon carcinoma cell line HCT-116) using cell viability assay. The highest cytotoxic activity was given by crude aerial MeOH extract followed by ethyl acetate extract then chloroform extract of the aerial part of Urtica urens.
