Abstract

Antenatal care (ANC) is the key entry point of a pregnant women to receive broad range of health promotion and preventive services which promote the health of the mother and the baby. ANC is the care of a pregnant women and her fetus by health care staff, including obstetricians, nurses, midwives and laboratory technicians from the time of conception to the onset of labor. ANC should focus on ensuring, supporting and maintaining maternal and fetal well-being throughout pregnancy and child birth. Perception of care is influenced by the expectations of the clients who use the care and by the actual nature of the care being provided.
Pregnant women`s expectations include what is assumed, desired, wished and hoped for. In the word ‘ expected’ , one can perceive the necessity and potential for dissatisfaction if this expectation is not, or no longer, fulfilled. In other words, clients may be initially impressed because a service was beyond their expectations. However, it then may become a need and is requested. This is the continuing challenge of trying to achieve excellence in client service by exceeding client`s expectations. It is of a great importance to clarify that women expectations and their satisfaction are not the same thing.
