Abstract
This study is an attempt to understand the nature of the attitude of the United Nations towards Israel during the period 1947 – 1967. The starting point is 1947 because this is the year that witnessed the issuance of partition resolution. The end point is 1967 because it witnessed The UN retreat from its role in resolving the causes of the Arab – Israeli conflict.
This study consists of seven chapters, beside an introductory chapter.
The introductory chapter entitled, ”The establishment of the UN and its attitude towards the Palestinian problem until the creation of Israel” is interested in highlighting the fact of the United Nations attitude towards Israel during the period 1947–1949.
The first chapter entitled, ”The attitude of the UN towards Israel during the Palestine war 1948” studies the UN resolutions on the Palestinian issue after the partition plan, and its effect on the final outcome of the war.
The Second chapter entitled, ”The UN and its attitude towards Israel during the tripartite aggression 1956”, studies the political conditions of the aggressor States and the attitude of the UN towards it, Then it studies the attitude of the UN towards the aggression and the Israeli reactions towards it. Finally, it studies the UN’s role and the impact of its resolutions on the outcome of the aggression of the political changes in the area .
The third chapter, entitled ”The attitude of the UN towards Israel during 1967 War” deals with Israel’s efforts to wage the war, and the attitude of the UN towards it, the sheds light on the UN attitude and the general international situation which led to Israel’s quick launch of aggression against the Arab countries. Thais chapter will also tackle the causes of the international organization failure to find a solution for the crisis .
The fourth chapter entitled ”The United Nations and the issues of the refugees, Jerusalem and borders” casts light on the role UN has played in the most important issues that resulted from the creation of Israel in Palestine ”Refugees, Jerusalem, and borders” and the UN’s success in finding a solution to these issues .
The Fifth chapter entitled ”The United Nations and the issues of the truce, diversion of the Jordon River and the Israeli war crimes”, explains the attitude of the UN towards these issues which have increased as a result of Israel’s continued aggression against the Arab countries, and the UN’s success in solving it .
The sixth chapter entitled ”Israel’s foreign policy and its impact on resolution – making within the United Nations process”, discusses the importance of the UN resolutions from the standpoint of Israel, Israel’s work to affect these resolutions, and the ways in which Israel pursued to achieve this. It also tackles the global interest policy and its impact on resolution – making within the UN process.
The seventh and the last chapter entitled ”The Israeli practices towards the United Nations”, studies the Israeli vision for the international organization, the methods used to control it, and its policy towards the UN staff ”pro – Israel and colorless”.
The study ends with a conclusion that addresses the significant results that have been reached, and a list of major sources and references that have been relied upon during the study.
