Abstract

Aim: The current study attempts to determine the effect of hydrocolloid
dressing plus silver sulfadiazine cream versus conventional therapy on the
healing process of burn wounds. Subjects: A purposive sample of 60
patients were assigned randomly and divided alternatively into two equal
groups; 30 patients for each group. Setting: The study was conducted at
Burn unit at Emergency Hospital Menoufia University Hospital. Tools: Four
tools were used for data collection, a knowledge assessment sheet, a burn
assessment sheet, a nutritional assessment sheet, and a wound healing
assessment sheet. Results: The findings revealed that the mean age was
(29.10±5.51, 29.50±5.27) for two group respectively. About 63.3% of the
study group and 70 % of the control group were male and 100% of study
sample lived in a rural area. The healing process was significantly faster and
better among the study group than the control group. The level of pain was
significantly improved for the study group compared with the control group.
Hospital stay, numbers of dressing changes and infection rate for the study
group were significantly decreased compared with the control group.
Conclusion: Usage of the hydrocolloid dressing has a positive effect on the
reduction of wound infection and enhances faster and better wound healing.
Recommendations: It is recommended that increase awareness of all staff
of burn unit and encourage them to use hydrocolloid dressing for faster and
better wound healing.
