Abstract

ABSTRACT
Nursing education should prepare students to make decisions using critical thinking, and to demonstrate problem solving which would increase their self-esteem. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess nursing students’ problem solving abilities and self-esteem at the Technical Health Institutes of Nursing. Research Design: Analytic cross-sectional study. Setting: The study was conducted at three Technical Institutes of Nursing affiliated to Al Azhar University Subjects: (253) students. Tools: Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire aimed at measuring nursing student’s problem solving knowledge and abilities, and a self-esteem scale. The fieldwork lasted from September 2013 to February 2014. Results: The study findings revealed that although these students are aware of problem solving their ability to order its steps is deficient, and their related knowledge is low. Also, a few of them have high level of self-esteem. Conclusion: Students’ self-esteem and their awareness of problem solving are positively correlated. The positive predictors of students’ self-esteem are higher academic performance and problem solving knowledge score, while being married is a negative predictor. Recommendations: The study recommends that the Technical Institutes of Nursing should adopt the problem-solving educational approach with training teachers in its application. Students need support in order to improve their self-esteem. Further research is needed for testing the effectiveness of various interventions on raising the self-esteem of the students of the Technical Institutes of Nursing.
