Aim of the Study:
The current study aimed at remediating some academic learning disabilities, especially in reading and writing , through a program based on Habits of Mind. These habits include: Persistence, applying past knowledge to new situations, seeking accuracy and precision, managing impulsivity, and flexibility of thinking.
Hypotheses of the Study:
1. There are statistically significant differences between the ranks of mean scores of the experimental group and those of the control group on the scale of reading and writing disabilities after the treatment in favor of the experimental group.
2. There are statistically significant differences between the ranks of mean scores of the experimental group in the pre and post measurement on the scale of reading and writing disabilities in favor of the post measurement.
3. There are no statistically significant differences between the ranks of mean scores of the experimental group in the post measurement and their ranks of mean scores in the follow-up measurement on the scale of reading and writing disabilities.
4. There are statistically significant differences between the ranks of mean scores of the experimental group and those of the control group on the scale of habits of mind (The Five Habits tackled by the study) after the treatment in favor of the experimental group
5. There are statistically significant differences between the ranks of mean scores of the experimental group in the pre and post measurement on the scale of habits of mind (The Five Habits tackled by the study) in favor of the post measurement.
6. There are no statistically significant differences between the ranks of mean scores of the experimental group in the post measurement and their ranks of mean scores in the follow-up measurement on the scale of habits of mind (The Five Habits tackled by the study).
Procedures of the Study:
Methodology:
The researcher adopted the Quasi- experimental method in this study. The remedial program is the independent variable, while the reading and writing disabilities and habits of mind are the dependent ones. The experimental group and the control group are matched in their chronological age, I. Q, the family socioeconomic level, severity of reading and writing disabilities, and their Habits of Mind before the treatment.
Sample of the Study:
The sample of the study consisted of 20 children from fifth and sixth grades who have low Habits of Mind accompanied with learning disabilities at the primary stage. Their ages are between 11 to 12 years old (M=11,545) and their IQ ranges from 90 to 110. They are from Amriya Primary School ,Cairo Governorate. This sample is divided into two groups.:
- Experimental group (10 children) (5 males, 5 females).
- Control group (10 children). ( 7 males, 3 females)
Tools of the Study:
1- Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices (standardized by/ Amina Kazem et al., 2005).
2- Family socio-economic level scale (Prepared by/ Abd Elaziz Elshakhs, 2013).
3- The Scale of Habits of Mind for children of primary school (Prepared by/ Abd Elaziz El-shakhs, Mahmoud El-Tantawy, Mohamed Fouad, 2015).
4- The scale of reading and writing disabilities (Prepared by/ Ahmed Awad, 2011) .
5- A program based on habits of mind for remediating some academic learning disabilities among children (Prepared by the researcher).
The Statistical Techniques:
To test the research hypotheses, the researcher has adapted the following statistical techniques:
- Wilcoxon test.
- Mann-Whitney test.
- Pearson correlation coefficient.
- Median.
- Quartiles.
Results of The Study:
The Study has revealed the verification of its hypotheses. This in turn shows the effectiveness of the training program in developing Habits of Mind ( including: Persistence, applying past knowledge to new situations, seeking accuracy and precision, managing impulsivity, and flexibility of thinking) among children with learning disabilities. The program is also effective in remediating reading and writing disabilities among those children.
