summary
The Islamic Army, which has Islamic conquests in all places depends mainly on the Arab component and it remained so since the days of the Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, and in the era of Caliphs and until the Umawy era, it was consists of Arabs of Yemen and Al-mdar, and when the Umawy state emerged in its conquests with including North Africa and Andalusia nations, they seek the help of the Berbers in their army, and they were sometimes asking help from al-mwali (they are non-Arab muslims, who are mostly Persians, whom Turks and sometimes we mean muslims from the Persians), So, they working in recruit Persians and used them in the eastern sides in the front of Khrasan, but these Persians soldiers did not obtain any certain offer, and they used them as solders and did not considered them as an important part of the army, until the Umawy state felt and the Caliph transferred to the Abbases, where the military systems have seen an important developments, especially after the caliphs gave up of the basic rule in formation of the Islamic armies that are mainly based on the (Arab) ad they allowed to the non-Arab races to enter the army service beside the Arabs races, such as khrasaniya, Al-mwaly, the Persians, the Turks, children, young men, Al-zwakel, Moroccans, negroes.
They played an important military role since the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate, and their presence effectively be found, not only on the base level of the army at all, but at the level of senior leadership.
Thus, the Abbasid army turned gradually from hands of Arabs to become an Islamic nation could be reached by any soldier in the army; because the senior military positions were opened to all nationalities not only Arabs races.
This study - which focus on the role of foreigners (non-Arabs) in the Army in the first Abbasid era - an important stage from stages of the Islamic military history in general and in Abbasid history in particular, because it highlights on the role played by the foreigners (the Persians - the Turks) in the Abbasid army, and the diffusion of their power, their influence and their power, and that relies the importance of this study and the reasons of its selection which depends in an attempt to fill a part of space in the historical library, especially in relation to the topic of foreigners’ role in the Abbasid army, because what was written about that part - as we know - few scattered sources and references and recent studies that dealt with research and interests in the study of the first Abbasid era, as well as my personal desire to study this subject, hope that this study be as basic seed that may share to enrichment of the Egyptian and Arab library, and to be remain opened to all researchers who are interested in expanding the research and seeking more.
Perhaps one of the most important difficulties we have faced in this study, lacking of references and previous studies, especially in the second chapter, which focused on the fashion and culture, especially the military clothes; which force us to overstep the obstacles to obtain these information from more than one source, within the Arab Republic of Egypt or abroad.
The study needs to divide the research plan to preface, four chapters and appendices, besides introduction and conclusion. The introduction included information about the importance of the study and self-reasons for the topic selection and we defined chapters of the study, and what difficulties we faced as well as the definition of some sources and references, as we also defined the topic subject, its serious, its overlaps and its different ways.
