Abstract

Mycobacterium bovis is one of the most important species of zoonotic pathogens that can be transmitted from cattle to humans. The presence of these pathogenic bacteria in bovine milk has emerged as a public-health concern, especially among individuals who consume raw milk and related dairy products. In the present study, the single intradermal tuberculin test (SIDT )was done on 2850 cows and results proved that 2.26 % of cows were positive. 62 tissue samples, 62 milk samples obtained from cows reacted positively to SIDT and 50 random milk samples were collected from different areas in Giza. Samples were cultured on Löwenstein-Jensen media Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was then performed on 10 milk samples.. Molecular identification detected one M.bovis (10%). The isolation of bacteria from the various locations occurred in the following proportions: 29 M.bovis (46.76%) of the tissue samples, 6 M.bovis (9.68 %) of the milk samples and one M.bovis(2) % of the random milk samples. This study indicated the risk of transmission of M.bovis from cattle to man. Strict control measures should be adapted.
