Abstract

This study was a trial to determine the possible correlation
between turbidity of the amniotic fluid by ultrasound and neonatal
respiratory effort after birth as evaluated by APGAR scoring.
The study was conduct on 60 pregnant women attending the
Gynecology & Obstetric department of Tanta University hospital
during a period of 6 months. All cases were early in labour and were
planned to be delivered by cesarean section under spinal anesthesia.
The duration of gestation was ranging from 32 weeks to full term. The
turbidity of the amniotic fluid was classified into 4groups fine
moderate–high turbidity and high turbidity with snow storm
appearance. APGAR scoring was done for all neonates after 5minates
after delivery.
This study shows a positive correlation between turbidity of the
amniotic fluid and APGAR scoring of the newborn after birth. Nearly
half of cases with fine turbidity have moderately depressed babies after
birth while all cases with coarse turbidity and snow storm appearance
have excellent APGAR scoring after birth regardless of the duration.
