Abstract

Adolescence is a critical period in girls’ life; whenever they need to have sexual and reproductive health information. Combining evidence-based interventions with sexual health education and ensures the preferred health outcomes. The aim of this study was developing a validated cultural- based sexual health education guideline for adolescent girls. Method: The study was based on two research designs: A Cross sectional design for the situation analysis of adolescent girls’ cultural background, beliefs, values, attitude and knowledge, as well as health educators’ experience in relation to sexual health education and quasi-experimental research design to assess the external validity and effect of implementing sexual health education guideline. The study was conducted at 16 faculties of Mansoura University. The subjects of the study included adolescent girls and health educator from staff members of community health nursing department. Theses adolescent girls were assigned randomly into two groups: 183 adolescent girls in intervention group who received the cultural- based sexual health education. The present guideline was based on different types of studies, developed according to the criteria of (AAN, 2011), (NZGG, 2001), (SIGN, 2011) and met the appraisal criteria of (AGREE II, Instrument, 2009). Furthermore, this guideline was evaluated by the intended users nursing and medical academic staff. Most of them mentioned that the guideline is effective, it’s recommendations stated clearly, could be easily implemented by nurses and they are in need for such guideline. The guideline’ recommendations were developed by integrating the pre-existing experience of healthcare professionals and views and preferences of hypertensive patients to the tracked best evidence.
Post implementation of guideline intervention, Study results revealed that the majority of those adolescent girls revealed significant improvement in the score level of knowledge and attitude regarding sexual health and sexual health education. After guideline recommendations application, health educators reported that the adolescent girls recalled all massages at the end of sessions and increased the health education satisfaction. The guideline’ recommendations were developed by integrating the pre-existing experience of healthcare professionals and views and preferences of hypertensive patients to the tracked best evidence. Post implementation of the guide total knowledge score illustrates, 31.1% of control group showed good score level of knowledge compared to 72.1% in the intervention with the means of 2.18 ± 1.46 and 1.03 ±0.25 marks respectively. The overall total attitude scores revealed that 53% of the control group showed positive attitude score compared to 74.9% of the intervention group. While 47% of control group showed negative attitude regarding sexual health and sexual health education compared to 25.1% of the intervention group. The main conclusion drown from this study The main conclusion drawn from the present study is recognizing the results of applying a cultural-based sexual health education guideline. It provides a safe and custom-made intervention hat ensures the preferred health outcomes and increases the care satisfaction in adolescent girls and community. The knowledge and attitude of adolescent girls regarding sexual health issues were improved after implementing the guideline. Both health educators and adolescent girls showed positive feedback about the cultural- based sexual health education guideline as well as the conducted health education sessions and the designed educational strategies. Based on the findings and conclusions drawn from the study, the following recommendations were made. It is imperative that Egypt develops a coordinated policy to adequately cater for the reproductive and sexual health needs of adolescent girls. This should include recommendations for the development and implementation of: Develop web- based sexual health education website that moderated by professional sexual health educators. Activate the role of primary health care professionals in sexual health education issues at university health unit. Continuous training for primary health care professionals on using this cultural- based sexual health education and Application of this cultural-based sexual health education, particularly targeting adolescents.
