Abstract

Non-alcoholic fatty liver has become in the last years the most prevalent chronic liver disease it has a spectrum from simple hepatic steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis which may lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer and expected to be the leading cause of liver transplant by 2030.
Affected patients are generally asymptomatic, mostly diagnosed accidentally when performing some routine tests such as liver functions and abdominal ultrasound, but the exact diagnosis of the disease and its stages requires further tests and rule out other causes of chronic hepatitis such as viral and autoimmune causes.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver treatment requires treating the causes and predisposing factors starting with lifestyle modification, exercise and commitment to a balanced healthy diet and treatment of metabolic syndrome as DM, hyperlipidemia and hypertension.
Therefore, non-alcoholic fatty liver can be prevented more than can be cured from this point; we made a survey questionnaire to find out people’s awareness about fatty liver, which may be helpful in promoting prevention and early detection of this disease. This survey include 1007 Egyptian attendants to AL Ahrar hospital and AL Zagazig fevers hospital in Sharkia government the questionnaire contained a set of questions about non-alcoholic fatty liver and cirrhosis and the precipitating factors to them also addressed the prevention, diagnostic methods and doctors education to their patients , the resulting data collected and tabulated and statistical analysis revealed that majority of participants (97.8%) did not receive any education from their doctors about non-alcoholic fatty liver, also only (3.5%) know that it is one of the causes of cirrhosis and only (8%) think it may lead to serious health problems, also education increases awareness of the problem as the not educated persons have the least awareness.
So our study proved that higher percentage of our general population remains unaware about this silent disease and patient education program were lacking.
Therefore more efforts needed by physicians to educate their patients and educational campaigns by media to raise awareness of the disease.
