This study is devoted to the analysis of the pomegranate value chain in
Egypt. The study investigates all nodes in the chain starting from seeds, farming,
harvesting, packing, transporting and marketing. Special attention is paid to the
analysis of horizontal and vertical linkages in the value chain. Pomegranate is an
important fruit crop in Upper Egypt in general and in Assuit Governorate in
particular. Its acreage constituted about one fifth of the aggregate fruit acreage
in Assuit during the period 2008-2013. About five thousand feddans were
grown to pomegranate in Assuit as an average during the previous period. The
crop is gaining an important impetus due to the increased awareness of its health
benefits and due to the growing export demand for pomegranate. In fact about
80 percent of Egypt’s production has been exported during the period2008-2013.
The study consists of four chapters. The first chapter reviews
previous studies and outlines the basic concepts of value chain analysis.
The second chapter explores the main trends of pomegranate production
and the relative importance of Assuit governorate. The description of the
pomegranate value chain is the subject of the third chapter. The last
chapter utilizes the primary data collected from the questionnaires to
analyze the chain with special attention to the vertical and horizontal
coordination arrangements within the chain. The study relied on primary
data collected from the field in Assuit where farmers were interviewed
during the summer season of 2014. At the same time firsthand
information were collected from traders and exporters in Cairo and
Alexandria wholesale markets. Secondary data on pomegranate statistics
were collected from other sources like the Ministry of Agriculture,
Central Agency of Public Mobilization and Statistics, Obour wholesale
market and Nozha wholesale market.
