Abstract
The purpose of this study was to design a theme-based program to develop prospective Egyptian English teachers’ cultural awareness and critical reading skill. The participants of the study were a group of 14 fourth year English majors, General Education, Ain Shams University. The study was based on the preexperimental one-group design. In order to achieve the objective of the study, a student interest survey was designed and carried out to understand and identify students’ interests, expectations and needs. In addition, a pre-posttest was created and used to assess and evaluate students’ cultural awareness and critical reading skill before and after the program. The program was taught in four weeks, two sessions per week, 24 hours in total. By the end of the program, a satisfaction questionnaire was administered to measure students’ satisfaction of the suggested program. Findings indicated that students’ cultural awareness and critical reading comprehension skill were enhanced and there were statistically significant differences between the two mean scores of the pretest and posttest of the participants in favor of their posttest mean scores. Moreover, the students showed great satisfaction from the suggested program.
