Abstract

A green house experiment was carried out on Triticum aestivum(wheat), cv. gemeza 9,in order to study the harmful effects of drought stress on wheat plant and to assess the important role of seaweed extracts in alleviating the adverse effects of drought on plant. Firstly, both the effective concentrations of seaweed extracts (Sargassum latifolium or Ulva lactuca) and the best time for pre-soaking of wheat grains that could alleviate the harmful effects of drought on wheat were determined according to a preliminary experiment. Seaweed extracts with Different concentrations of 1 %, 1.5 % and 2 % of Sargassum and 0. 5 %, 1 % and 1.5% of Ulva were used for grain presoaking. The pre-soaking was carried out for different periods, one, three or six hours. The 14-day-old seedlings of all treatments were harvested, washed with water and separated into roots and shoots. The different growth criteria (root depth, shoot height, shoot and root fresh and dry masses) were measured. Depending on the results of this preliminary experiment, the effective concentration of Sargassum extract was 1.5%, and that of Ulva extract was 1%, while the best time period of priming by pre-soaking which could stimulate the growth of wheat was 3 hours for both extracts.
